JK and Ferdinand have a closer look at Disney’s recent hit “Frozen” and discuss story inconsistencies, the problematic villain twist, the sidekick Olaf and what you can learn from it for your own film making. What do you like and dislike about Frozen? Do the story inconsistencies matter to you? Please feel free to join the discussion in the comments.

Oh, frozen. The movie that I have so many problems with. First of all – the designs. Anna and Elsa are sisters and they should be similar, but they’re also the main characters of the movie and the audience is gonna look at them for an hour and a half, so they should be different. Great designs are built on contrast – Mike and Sully, Buzz and Woody, Russel and Carl Fredricksen. Anna and Elsa look almost identical, only their hair and dresses are different. Look at this image:comment image

These are 3 different characters! Where is the difference in their designs?! What happened to the glorious Elsa with a coat made of alive ferrets? That was great, where did it go? The way Anna and Elsa look makes me think they were designed to look good on future dolls. Everybody is praising frozen for being about the sister love instead of romantic love. People say that it’s about time Disney makes a movie like that, but they are forgetting that Disney already DID! Lilo and Stitch. Nani and Lilo. Their sister relationship is much more true that the one presented in frozen. Sisters fight, sisters have awkward talks, sisters say stupid things and then feel guilty. They don’t giggle and finish each other’s sentences. That’s what barbies do. And that’s how I feel about the sister relationship in frozen. It feels like one from a barbie movie. Not convincing at all, fake. Another thing I have a problem with is the villain. Who is the villain here? Elsa? Hans? The Duke? Elsa was originally meant to be the villain with her army of snowman and I don’t know why they threw that idea away, it’s better than having Hans, who in the trailers was introduced as ‘the nice guy’ the villain. they REALLY wanted to have that twist at the end. If they made Hans a villain, why add the Duke? He was introduced as a bad guy, who wants to get Arendelle’s money and goods and all they had him do in the movie was call Elsa a witch. His character was pointless. A waste of good voice actor in my opinion. What if he was the evil father/uncle of Hans and was forcing him to marry Anna so he could rule Arendelle? That could have been something! There’s so many errors in this film and I think the movie would have been way better if they didn’t change it so much. What worries me though is the possibility of other studios adding the frozen pattern to their movies. People liked frozen and despite its many flaws it was very successful, now I worry that we’re gonna get movies like frozen, because of its success.

That’s a really wild image! I hadn’t seen it before, but it’s a good point. I know they’re sisters, but a little more uniqueness might have been nice. I also came across this image recently, I think on Twitter, that detailed the rather generic new body type of Disney female characters going forward. It was discouraging how accurate it was…

Frozen is BY FAR the best animated film since The Lion King. Maybe even better than TLK. I’m sorry if you and other people can’t see that but numbers don’t lie. It has made more money than any other film in history already and is itn’t stopping yet. All the complaints people have online are wrong and it isn’t just me saying that again just look at the sales numbers. Numbers don’t lie. If it makes you feel better to bash it then who cares. The people who made it will have all their money and don’t care if you think it isn’t good.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course! You’re very right, the box office numbers show just how popular Frozen is with the general audience. At the same time, that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be better or that it doesn’t have some pretty glaring flaws, which is what our analysis was intended to explain. We were not bashing the film, merely talking about aspects of it that could have been improved, and also aspects that we felt were very strong from a film making, story, or character standpoint. 🙂

ZeldaLink – Just because something is popular does not mean it is good. Cigarettes are very popular and sell well and so does heroin. Neither are good for you. There have also been many films that have been very successful but actually not been very good. Ever hear of a little film called Titanic? Look it up.

Good analysis. I think some people think Frozen is a little more perfect then it really is…

Zelda: You make some interesting points but the truth is a lot of the mass market audience doesn’t understand film and storytelling very well. I think this video was speaking to the film makers and animators out there more than the group of mass market individuals.

Excellent analysis

Frozen didn’t deserve a half of what it made. Bunch of people caught up in “Let it go” and feminism.

This video post is truly enormous!

Very good analysis, I agree with what you said. I think it could have been a better movie, but I also like how much attention to the effects they put in. Some of the ice stuff was AMAZEBALLS.

I like this I hope you will do it again for Frozen 2 when it comes out and then Frozen 3 and 4 😛

I believe what we all really need to see is a love story cross over with elsa and jack frost
